Security screen doors are a great security measure to have installed on the exterior doors of your house. They provide an extra barrier to entry for potential intruders. They can also look smart as well as blending in with their surroundings. While the benefit of security screen doors is unquestionable, you do need to find the right option that suits your specific needs.

There are different considerations to keep in mind when choosing one. Here is some advice to keep in mind during this process.

Material

The majority of security screen doors are made of either aluminium, steel or a metal alloy. All of these materials have the necessary strength to act as a security door, but due to aluminium and metal alloys being weaker than steel, the door frames will need to be made wider in order to provide the adequate strength resistance.

Aluminium doors will not rust, but they are the more expensive option. Steel doors are susceptible to rusting if you don't properly maintain them. By regularly cleaning them and giving them a powder coat, they will not rust for a long time, if ever. If they do rust, the process of recoating them is fairly straightforward.

Finish

There is a choice to make between getting a door that is powder coated or painted

The majority of paint is not heat tested or even resistant to heat. Therefore, if you live in a sunny climate, the paint will not hold up well. Having a painted door means that you will regularly need to conduct extra maintenance and regularly apply new layers of paint.

Powder coating is put on in the form of a dry powder that is easily spread. As opposed to paint, powder coating does not need to have a solvent used in order to keep the filler parts and the binder in a specific suspension state. The application of powder coating is through electrostatically based methods and is then sealed with heat. This creates a surface that is tougher than if the door was painted.

Seal

You need to ensure that the seal of the door is adequate for the environment that you are living in. The last thing you want is for bugs and insects to enter the house through the screen. If you live in environments where these pests are in abundance, make sure you get a door that is sealed with foam tape, as this will provide an adequate seal.
